Volunteer Spotlight: Jackie Smith

Jackie email picJackie Smith has been spending time at Asbury Woods since the late 70’s. Back then she would take her kids to the woods for a stroll on the boardwalk, then visit the old cottage and the small animal room. As the children grew up, they started participating more. One of Jackie’s daughters liked helping with Animal Care on Saturdays as part of the Explorer Club. “Through the years we visited often, and during the pandemic, it was the perfect place to be. I'm pleased to say my 14-year-old granddaughter will be helping as a camp volunteer at Asbury Woods this summer,” said Jackie.

Jackie started volunteering at Asbury Woods because she wanted to give back to a place that she has enjoyed so much over the years. Since starting as a volunteer in 2022 she has helped in so many ways, from working in the gift shop, assisting in the train room during Winter Wonderland, leading groups at Scary Creature Feature and walking Brown’s Farm as part of the City Nature Challenge. “I’ve participated in a lot of programming throughout the years but walking in the woods and near Browns Farm is my favorite thing about Asbury Woods. That and Monday Music in the Woods concerts!” says Jackie. “I’m so glad that this beautiful property was here for me and my daughter, and now my granddaughter to enjoy!”

While working in the gift shop, Jackie has enjoyed the experience of meeting new visitors and getting to hear their comments about Asbury Woods, “They are always quite surprised by the facility, be it the beautiful building, the trails or the activity in which they participated.” As a non-profit, Asbury Woods relies heavily on its volunteers to help accomplish its mission. We appreciate all that our volunteers do for us from the smallest task to the bigger lifts, we need it all to make it work!  If you would like to volunteer, check out the volunteer opportunities listed on our website under “Get Involved,” or contact Rachel Hull, Development Associate at 814-836-6181 or
