"Let’s Go Outside and Play"

By Kelley Lang

Most adults who are inspired by nature and who regard Asbury Woods as a special place in our community can usually tell a story about a time in their childhood when they first discovered their love of the outdoors. Many of these stories feature exploring in the woods, hearing an owl hoot, seeing a baby animal, or having an adventure with their friends in a special place. At Asbury Woods we believe passionately that every child deserves a chance to play, explore, and discover the big, beautiful world outdoors. Our summer camps, which are offered from mid-June through August, were established on the attitude that no one can be expected to care about and save the natural world if they don’t know about and understand it. At Asbury Woods, we do our best to foster a genuine appreciation for and love of nature by inviting campers to explore with us each week to discover the world around them through hands-on, outdoor, experiential learning. In doing so, the hope is to inspire the youth of today to become environmentally responsible citizens of tomorrow.

Nature, teamwork, exploration, imagination, and fun are the staples of our Summer Nature Camp! Countless indigenous plants and animals are highlighted throughout the Nature Center’s grounds. We invite kids to discover the secret lives of animals during "Animal EDventures" Nature Camp. Imaginative kids who love stories, magic and pretending will delight in "Fantasy Forest" as we explore how the creatures of fairy tales are inspired by real live animals.

Kids who are ‘naturally’ artistic may prefer our Nature Art Camp. Creativity shines through as we paint, draw, and sculpt, reflecting all of the new knowledge we accumulate throughout the day about our environment. Digital Photography Camp gives students the opportunity to capture a snapshot of nature using light and texture and form in artistic expression.

This year, students entering grades 7, 8, and 9 can join us for two new Summertime Adventures. "Asbury Woods Nature Survivor" campers will learn the basics of surviving outdoors through fun and challenging activities. Campers attending "Let it Grow Camp" will care for vegetable gardens, visit farms, and pick berries. We will spend time outside discovering how food journeys from farm to table.

We believe that sparking a lifelong love of learning helps forge a deep and unshakable connection with the natural world that is truly beneficial to our planet and our hearts. Summer Nature Camp registration is open now and we can’t wait to see the passion for the natural world that shines through as children forge their own memories at the Woods this summer.
