In December, 2017, I was thrilled to join the team at Asbury Woods. While the position is new, my passion for Asbury Woods, the outdoors and our mission of inspiring a greater sense of environmental awareness, sustainability, and stewardship has been a lifelong pursuit.
As a child, my family's Sunday afternoon activity was often a walk in the woods on various public lands across northwestern Pennsylvania. It was a chance for the demands of work, chores, school, sports and activities to be traded for the simple pleasures that come from taking a walk in the woods. Along the way, my dad shared his vast knowledge of spotting animal tracks, birds, identifying trees by leaf and bark characteristics and navigating in the woods. While those facts have stayed with me to varying degrees, the bigger lesson imparted by my parents on our walks in the woods was that nature had a place in our lives; that the natural world was a place for us to enjoy, to learn from and to protect.
It was no accident that my siblings and I grew up placing a high value on outdoor experiences, believing in being responsible stewards of natural resources and waiting to ensure natural places are preserved. Asbury Woods is steeped in the tradition of sharing those same values with generations of children through our environmental education programs. As we continue to evolve as an independent organization, we will further explore how we can provide a broader and more diverse segment of the community with experiences that inspire those values. We will strive to provide opportunities for more people to understand that the outdoors and nature has a place in their lives.
Thank you for being our partner in pursing that mission. I look forward to seeing you in the woods very soon.
