"Childhood Unplugged" by Kelley Lang

Posted Feb 23, 2016

Digging for bugs. Looking for turtles in the pond. Turning over rocks. Rolling down a grassy hill. Floating boats in a creek. These activities are the hallmarks of a childhood spent outdoors and the ways by which children become friends with the natural world. Nowadays, it is common to hear children say they would rather play inside because that is where the really great toys are (you know – the ones with the touch screens?). At Asbury Woods, we believe in providing children with high touch experiences; touching frogs and moss and creek water and mud. These are the kinds of experiences that create memories and connect children to nature in ways that an electronic screen cannot.

Asbury Woods Summer Camps, which are available to children in preschool and elementary school, are unique in the region for the quality of the camp experience and the commitment of our adult camp educators. Our commitment to you is to provide your child with a positive and educational camp experience, whether your child enjoys the arts, wildlife, the outdoors, or being physically active.

This year, we are offering some exciting new changes to our camp season. First, we will be offering half-day preschool camp weekly throughout the entire camp season. Parents will have the option to select either a 3-day or a 5-day camp experience for their preschooler. Also, fans of art camp will find three different themes to choose from at their grade level. Try one or try them all – we are shaking up art camp with new creative experiences for budding artists. Nature lovers will be excited to explore this year’s Nature Camp themes: Sky Zone, Micro Mysteries, and Curious Creatures. The online registration is the fastest, easiest way to enroll your child in camp and is currently open. You can register your child today by visiting: registrationdesk.asburywoods.org/camps

Finally, for middle and high school students ready for the next level of adventure, we will be offering several day trips. For more information, check out the Outdoor Adventure page on the website: asburywoods.org/programs/outdoor-adventures.
