Animal Care Crew

Animal Care Crew

Animal Care Crew is a youth volunteer opportunity (ages 12-16) that offers experience working with and caring for a variety of live animals. Asbury Woods cares for many species of animals including mammals, amphibians, reptiles and fish.

This volunteer opportunity is great for anyone interested in a career involving animals, working with the public, education, environment or just wants to help Asbury Woods.

  • Gain experience caring for and handling over 15 different species of live animals
  • Interact with visitors to Asbury Woods
  • Learn how to research and design enrichment activities for the animals
  • Work as a member of a team
  • Connect with vets, environmental educators, animal exhibit designers, and the Asbury Woods team to learn about their careers

Once training is complete, the Animal Care Crew meets on Saturdays at 9:00 a.m.

Animal Care Crew Training

There is an introductory meeting for all accepted new animal crew volunteers on January 12, 2019 from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. at the Andrew J. Conner Nature Center at Asbury Woods. Please see the application for dates and times of make-up meetings.

Mandatory training sessions are scheduled from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the following dates. Each training session will focus on the care for a different type of animal:

  • January 19
  • January 26
  • February 2
  • February 9

Following training, new members of the Animal Care Crew will join the veteran members during the regularly scheduled time: Saturday starting at 9:00 a.m. Most weeks, the feeding and cleaning takes two hours but there may be weeks that special cleanings need to be completed that will take more time. Variations in schedule will be announced in advance. Our expectation is that each member of the Animal Care Crew volunteer at least one Saturday each month.
